Top tips for new mums on social media

How many times have you found yourself in a social media vortex, looking for inspiration and losing hours in a scrolling frenzy only to come out feeling worse about yourself? It happens to the best of us and without realising it, we forget that not only is instagram just a snapshot of someones day, it is more often than not the best snapshot of their day!

We know that life as a new Mum involves a lot more time awake that it used to and therefore lots more opportunity to spend scrolling through social media. Rather than tell you to put your phone away, to delete the app, to read a book instead here are some of our top tips so that when you are on instagram, hopefully you can make it a more enjoyable experience.

  1. Follow more people like you

There is a time and a place for following super models frolicking around the Caribbean in a bikini, but sitting in a dark room breast feeding at 3am is probably not the one. Following other new (non celebrity) mums will allow you to see that you’re all in the same boat, you’re all learning as you go and making mistakes some days.

  2. Interact

Ask questions, make comments, tell people your tips and tricks. If you see another Mum using a product that they swear by, ask them where they got it or ask them how they use it. Don’t be afraid to use instagram to learn and get advice. You don’t need to be a silent scroller!! … but positivity only please!

  3. You can choose …

People seem to forget that your feed is up to you. You have the power to create a feed that is going to empower you and make you feel positive every time you look at it, or quite the opposite. If you’re going to look at your phone first thing in the morning, treat it as if it’s your morning paper. What do you want to do - whether you want to be inspired to workout, eat well, dress well or just some cute pictures of puppies to make you smile then that is what you should be seeing!

  4. Scroll through your own page

If you post pictures yourself, then don’t forget to scroll through your own pictures from time to time. Remind yourself how far you have come, and how much your baby has grown and that is down to you! If you don’t post many pictures, then just go through the hundreds that you take on your phone. When you’re having a tough day this can be all you need to remind yourself that you’re doing a brilliant job and that it is just one day of so many to come and it’s all been worth it!

  5. Take a break

Every so often leave your phone in another room. Even for just for an hour. You don’t need to go full digital detox but just take a bath without it and read a book. If anything its good for your eyes to have a break from a back lit screen but it will also give your mind a rest. You don’t realise how much you think when you scroll - why are they on holiday and I’m not? Is my baby supposed to be doing that now too? Where does she get that dress from? Wow her house is great, must remember to do this next time …. even if its positive it’s a lot to take in so have a break from it every so often!

Hopefully some of those tips will help you to have a more enjoyable experience with social media, we think it’s an amazing platform and has such huge potential to inspire and educate so many but only if it’s used in the right way!

Happy Scrolling!
